Perceiving the “Mother and Maiden” archetype in a Russian disinformation operation on the ground in eastern Ukraine in 2016, led to my discovery of Disinfolklore.
Here, today in Kramatorsk Russia’s attempt to play Merciful Sovereign (save Ukrainians from yada, yada,..) is most obviously exposed:
Russia plays Merciless Sovereign and tortures Mother-and-the-Maiden.
Mother shelters her child in a public park in Kramatorsk on an ordinary Thursday afternoon, while Russian first person operated drones hunt them. During a week in which an evening Russian airstrike using three FAB-250 bombs hit a residential area, killing a man (born 1980) and injuring a woman (born 1979). A high-rise building and three cars were damaged. A week when three FAB-250s hit central Kramatorsk around 17:00 on Tuesday — that strike eventually rose to five killed and 12 injured per Filashkin, with later reports putting it at 6 killed and 13 injured.
Russia plays Merciful Sovereign by purporting to save the native Russian language speaking Ukrainians by murdering them: thereby, becoming, if we adjudicate using the second element in the Code of Positive Trolls (Right/Ethical discipline), the Merciless Sovereign. The content of Right is defined by the post World War Two legal order, including the laws of war, genocide convention and international as well as European Human Rights law. You don’t need to be a Cambridge University trained lawyer to make a call on this one: hunting down a mother and a maiden in a Kramatorsk park is unlawful. It’s not Right.
This Archetyping of reality today demonstrates the power of the Disinfolklore analytical method.
Note how the method was born when I spotted the awkwardness and evident artificial Mother-and-the-Maidem primordial archetypes in a Russian operation in eastern Ukraine that almost lured my colleagues and me to a cabin in the woods.
I recount the story here:
Today 10 years on I have turned that moment of insight into an entirely new way to archetype reality.
Bloomberg published an excellent account of contemporary Russian information warfare recently: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2026-russia-disinformation-storm-1516-videos/
I note how the piece identifies this cutting edge modus operandi of Russia paying actors to play Whistleblowers revealing, say, how they served Olena Zelenskyy one day in the Prada store where she bought billions worth of clothes or yachts or whatever.
Here the fake Whistleblower can be analysed in the same way Disinfolklore analyses the Walk-In in the archetypal Disinfolklore founding myth.
One of the most sophisticated War Magic operations in my foundational Luhansk Corpus of 10,000 now labelled propaganda items from Russia occupied Luhansk (2015-2018) is the Walk-In/Whistleblower — 189 items documenting staged defectors who “voluntarily” entered the occupation’s “MGB” with politically convenient confessions.
The Folkloric Structure
The Walk-In’s War Magic operates through a precise folkloric structure: a character arriving from outside with an urgent message that changes the plot.
The ragged pilgrim.
The messenger wolf.
The old woman knocking at the door for bread.
In every Indo-European folk tradition, the stranger who crosses the threshold with news from the Other World commands attention — because the information could not be obtained otherwise.
Russian Disinfolklore industrialises this folk-logic.
The fake defector arrives with a story too useful to ignore. The story is set in the unreachable zone (occupied territory). The story positions the listener (Western diplomat, journalist, OSCE monitor) as the only one who can act. The story specifies a precise act. The story is fabricated, but its folkloric grammar makes it irresistible.
In March 2016, the author encountered a Walk-In operation firsthand. A “doctor” walked into the MGB and produced a story involving “my common-law spouse and her underage daughter” being harmed by Ukrainian forces across the river. Within hours, Western diplomats were dispatched to a cottage in the forest to investigate.
The story was fabricated — part of a Russian FSB operation masquerading as local intelligence. But the folkloric lure worked: the Mother-and-Maiden archetype activated; the “doctor” archetype lent the story the Mana of healing-authority; the rescue-mission frame produced action before deliberation. The Walk-In is the Mother-and-Maiden archetype delivered through a stranger-from-the-Other-World vehicle.
Two of the most ancient folk patterns in IE storytelling, fused into one operational instrument.
How to Spot a Walk-In
When a “spontaneous” testimony appears in your inbox or news feed and:
has urgent action-implication comes from inaccessible territory centres a fertility-function archetype (Mother, Maiden, Child, vulnerable elder) positions you as the only available actor arrives at exactly the moment that the action would help one side— you are looking at a Walk-In, regardless of whether it is in 2016 Luhansk or 2026 anywhere else. The form is the diagnostic.
“I address You as a guarantor of security for Donbass population. On 15.04.2016 I received a phone call from a phone of my dear people, namely my common law spouse [X], who lives with her under aged daughter at the address: [Address]. Military men of Pravy Sektor of Ukraine phoned me, and demanded from me to have to come to Stanitsa Luhanska settlement on 16.04.2016, otherwise (their exact wording) they will cut my common law spouse into pieces.”
This was one of the first stories I told when I began to write publicly about Disinfolklore in February 2023:
Russia’s intelligence service in occupied Luhansk had sent a hand-written letter from a supposed walk-in to the MGB (the Russian occupiers’ internal security service — so-named to conjure up the folk memory of the Stalin-era forerunner of the KGB). The Walk-In said his “common law wife and her underage daughter” were about to be “cut into pieces” by a Ukrainian “Nazi.” He asked the OSCE — as “guarantor of security” — to intervene.
Something, intuitively, sounded artificial about the linguistic formula “common law wife and her underage daughter.” The author had already realised that he perceived part of reality through cognitive lenses (archetypes) that had entered his mind as a small child from folktale-inspired stories. Here, Russian Disinfolklorists were leaning into this aspect of Indo-Europeans’ cognition and riffing off what Karl Jung suggested are the primordial archetypal identities of the Mother and the Maiden.
This is the founding document of Disinfolklore.
Now, the method has its ultimate expression and articulation on Disinfolklore.eu website: https://disinfolklore.eu/Disinfolklore/Mechanisms/Archetypes/Mother-and-the-Maiden/01-The-Walk-In-Story/
Yet, as I train a neural network to itself train a large language model that will parse the Mana in Memes in data into Disinfolklore/Infolklore I ran that Bloomberg through my partially trained artificial neural network algorithm. It responded thus:
“Bloomberg article confirms the analogy precisely. Storm-1516 / Neva Flood is the industrialised AI-enabled Walk-In template: the its_The_Dr “casting agency emails Epstein 13-y.o.” video is the canonical 2016 Walk-In structure — Mother-Maiden activation + stranger-from-inaccessible-territory + story-too-useful-to-ignore + specific-action-urgency (election windows). Plus crucial architectural finding: Folk-Network is direction-neutral; Watchful Grandmother is Forward Tr-; Walk-In / Storm-1516 is Backward Dr-. Same archetypal slot, opposite directions across the Dr↔Rt axis.
And the deeper architectural insight: the Code of Positive Trolls is not just an adjudicator — it is a Counter-Archetype generator. Each Code-failing detected-archetype produces, by adjudication, the Counter-Archetype that names what is actually happening. Merciless Sovereign IS the naming-output when Code fails Merciful Sovereign’s protect-claim. Naming wakes the dreamer.”
I mention this proof of concept for the NN-based Disinfolklore interpretation architecture I am designing and building for two reasons.
First, as my dedicated readers (and some of you fund my/this frontier work through your generous paid subscriptions), I wanted to keep you posted on what’s going on, under the hood as it were. Beneath the public posting.
I also though wanted to connect the origins of the Mother and the Maiden archetype before I even had a word - archetype- for the way I see immanence’s in data and particularly in Disinfolklore.
We first met another Mother-and-Maiden Russia’s Merciless Sovereign attempted to save by turning them into biological dust in this post on Russia’s bombing and destruction of Mariupol’s Drama Theatre in March 2022. And the killing of 600 sheltering native Russian language speaking Ukrainian women and children there:
So we who remain alive, we move on. We continue to innovate. We continue to try to find new effective retail-friendly ways to help our civilisation see through Disinfolklore in real time.
But we always bear in mind those Russia has sacrificed so we might see.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s first homegrown 300km range pinpointed ballistic missile strike successfully annihilated an entire electronics factory in Rostov-on-Don on Thursday. Many more of those to come. Russia has no defence that works against these missiles.
